Obituary for Kent Tracy Ward

June 4, 1961 - February 8, 2021
Greenwood, Indiana | Age 59

Kent Tracy Ward

passed away early morning, Monday February 8th, 2021 at the age of 59. Kent had been living with pulmonary fibrosis and heart failure and had been on oxygen for 3 years. He became ill on Sunday and went to the hospital. After three years of struggling with pulmonary fibrosis, especially during a pandemic that focused on the lungs, he was just exhausted, refusing to be placed on a ventilator. Despite visitor restrictions, family was allowed to be there with him and he passed quietly later in the morning.

Kent's parents were Vernon Dale Ward and Sue Ann (Cornett) Ward, of Greenwood. They preceded him in death. Kent was born June 4, 1961 in San Antonio, Texas while his father served in the US Army. The family returned to Greenwood a few months later and resided on Smith Valley Rd. Kent attended Greenwood Schools and graduated from Greenwood Community High School in 1979. Kent married Sheryl (Waltz) Ward in 1983, living on southside of Indianapolis and moving back to Greenwood in 1996. Kent is survived by his wife, Sheryl, their son Clinton (Sheila) Ward and granddaughter Veronica, daughters Haley Ward and Mallory Ward, sister Kimberly (Dan) Skeel, and nephew Tanner Skeel.

He worked commercial construction for 25 years and after he retired became a bus driver for Greenwood Schools. He also did special construction projects in-house for the school system – building football press boxes, baseball dugouts, and remodeling the school clinic, etc. Kent loved his school bus kids and driving different Greenwood sports and became a very popular driver for the different teams because of his iPod play lists. His family jokingly called him "Mr. Greenwood" because he seemed to know everyone. Growing up in Greenwood, raising his children in Greenwood and all their activities, he couldn't go anywhere without running into someone he knows. No trip out was short.

Kent attended University of Indianapolis, taking classes in the evening and graduated in 1991 with a B.S in Business Administration, something he and his family were incredibly proud of.

Kent enjoyed boating at Lake Monroe, hanging out at his seasonal campground site near the lake. He liked watching IU Sports, Colts Football, and the St Louis Cardinals with family and friends. Kent was a member of the Sons of The American Legion Atkins Saw Post #355.

Due to health concerns, the family has decided to delay a Celebration of Life until warmer weather where family and friends can gather and have the party Kent would have wanted. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Community Health Network Foundation.
